French Young Learner Assessment

The language placement assessment is a short 15 minute session used to understand a learner’s current level and how they use the language in practice.

The assessment focuses primarily on speaking and is designed to place learners accurately into a suitable group or to set the starting point for private lessons.

This is not a pass–fail test, and there is no preparation required.

What we look at

During the assessment, we consider:

• How comfortably the learner can communicate
• Accuracy and clarity of spoken language
• Vocabulary range and sentence control
• Listening comprehension

The assessment allows us to recommend an appropriate course level and ensure that learning is paced correctly.

Who needs an assessment

• All new learners to group courses at elementary level and above or private lessons
• Learners returning after a long break

What happens after the assessment

After the assessment, we will:

• Confirm the recommended course or level
• Advise on suitable group options or private lesson curriculums
• Answer any practical questions about scheduling or format

There is no obligation to enrol following the assessment, however, the assessment fee can be deducted from the cost of a course should the learner choose to enrol.
